Event: Expanded Animation 2021

Coming from directing the sport events in high school, I got curious in participating at the live event Expanded Animation. Having already experience with directing and organizing, I started out with a ToDo list and ideas on what graphics and video footage could be useful. Even though many of those wouldn’t make it into the final event (such as a looping title animation, animated lower thirds and a clean transition between title animation and video footage), I focused mainly on a way shorter approach of the latter: Bumper/Transitions.

Even though it was not planned in the first case by the organizers, I already started working on the event dividers when the first meeting was held. The idea was to both show the title of the upcoming talk as well as providing a smooth transition (and bond!) between the event CI (with its recurring visual elements) and said talks in form of videos. This was the case because the event was still heavily influenced by the Corona restrictions which is why most of the guest couldn’t be there on site. The bond was especially crucial as I felt, since the videos would vary in their quality, that those would help convince the viewers that everything belongs to the same event and give it a more “official” character.

Thus, I did a cut of the title animation as well as its audio and worked with a Keyer to create the needed transparency for the last part of the transition which I felt was an elegant solution of blending both video sources together. As it happens, the audio just added in to make it more believable.

The final result can be seen here:

Closing words

Even though the event was still influenced by the Corona restrictions, I totally got invested and from this point on started to help out at nearly every live event on the university as well the upcoming Expanded Animation events.
